Big Data in the Real World: Retail

It’s no secret that the retail industry has faced drastic changes over the past decade.   Trends ranging from changing demographics (Millennials replacing Baby Boomers as primary customers), online sales growth while brick and mortar revenues decline, an increase in major security breaches affecting millions of customers, and customer experience failures (and wins) broadcast through social media. All of these affect the way major retailers, as well as mom and pop shops, do business today.

Minimize Constant Data Format Transformations with MarkLogic NoSQL Database Platform

If you’ve ever developed an enterprise web application with a relational database then you’re very familiar with the constant data format transformations that need to take place in the middle tier.  When retrieving data from a relational database, you are forced to transform the retrieved columns and rows into an XML or JSON document that can be consumed by the requestor.  Likewise, if a web service client delivers an XML or JSON document into your application and you need to store the XML or JSON document content, you now need to transform the XML data by mapping it into columns and rows to be inserted into your relational database.

MarkLogic World 2015 Takeaway—Customers Deliver Applications Faster with MarkLogic

Several members of the General Networks team just returned from a great couple of days in San Francisco for MarkLogic World, the kickoff event of the 2015 MarkLogic World Tour, headed to 8 more cities in the US and around the world.  There were excellent keynotes, technical presentations and deep dive discussions about the MarkLogic Enterprise NoSQL database platform and lots of buzz about exciting new features included in MarkLogic 8, released earlier this year.  Some of the most talked about features include semantics, bitemporal, and native support for JSON, server-side JavaScript and node.js client API.
