The Updated ISO 9001:2015 is Coming: Are You Ready for the Six New Requirements?

The Updated ISO 9001:2015

Introduced in September 2015, the updated ISO 9001:2015 represents a significant change to ISO 9001:2008 requirements. The new standard is scheduled to take effect on September 14, 2018. This gives organizations three years to prepare from the date of release, and more than half that time is now passed. Only 15 months remain for you to comply. If you aren’t already on the path to compliance, now is the time to begin.

The new updated ISO 9001:2015 standard includes fewer clauses (eight instead of ten), a revised high-level structure that forms a new common core for all quality standards (Annex SL), and several terminology differences. It also includes the following six new major requirements that you’ll need to incorporate into your quality management system (QMS). Continue reading…

Rethinking ECM

Rethinking Enterprise Content Management (ECM)

Over the past 20 years or so, the aspiration of many organizations looking for enterprise content management solutions (ECM) has been to standardize on one common platform where everyone in the organization can store and find content. Aspiration is the operative word here.

While many companies bought an ECM platform with the hopes that it would be the single source of truth for the enterprise, few have achieved enterprise-wide adoption.  In fact, many so-called enterprise content management systems engage only a small percentage of the organization’s workforce.

As many of us who have worked on big IT projects have discovered, IT plans do not always translate into user adoption and action. Regardless of IT directives to use the ECM for document storage, users have options. They can park a document in a file share, the email system, a Web drive (like Box or One Drive) or on their local hard drive. Continue reading…

SharePoint Case Study | Replacing a Legacy Document Management System with a Customized SharePoint Solution

SharePoint Case Study

Background

General Networks was asked to replace a legacy document management system with a SharePoint-based solution for a public policy research organization. First, we conducted an environment assessment and user interviews and discovered the Project Management department had been using an old version of Oracle I/PM for document archiving and project proposal approval. The system, which had a high user approval rating, had not been updated in many years. IT felt the system was unsupportable and didn’t want to commit the financial and personnel resources to an Oracle upgrade.

The organization was already using SharePoint for team collaboration. As a result, General Networks had a better chance of obtaining the organization’s buy-in to move forward with implementing a SharePoint document management solution.

First, we identified the following implementation challenges, as the organization needed to: Continue reading…
